When you think about the Outer Banks of
North Carolina, what comes to mind?
Sitting on your porch watching the ocean waves break
on the shore? Maybe strolling along the sand collecting shells...or taking a swim in the
warm waters of either the ocean or the surrounding sounds. For some of you, climbing or
even hang gliding on Jockey's Ridge (the largest sand dune on the east
coast) would be fun. Outer Banks fishing, either surf, pier, charter, or small boat, is
some of the worlds best! The Outer Banks has numerous lighthouses, some can even be
climbed! Don't forget to visit the Wright Brothers Monument, the site of
man's first flight! And for you golfers, we have some wonderful courses. Nearby Roanoke
Island has numerous things to see and do. During the summer, the outdoor drama,The
Lost Colony, tells of the arrival of the first colonists to the New World, at the Fort
Raleigh Historic Site. You can also vist the, Elizabeth II, the
replica of the boat on which the colonists came here. Don't forget to visit the beautiful Elizabethan
Gardens, historic downtown Manteo, and the North Carolina Aquarium.
Hatteras Island is the 1st U.S. National Seashore, a haven for the fisherman and
windsurfers alike. It is also home to three lighthouses. Diving charters are available to
the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
